Trying to ID crash location & date for this He111 of 1./KG1 during the WC/FC

Hello,

This photo of a FL 1./KG1 He111 has long evaded firm identification. This latest photo is posted on eBay with a location at "Veldwezelt, Belgium, 1940." This is directly west across the river from Maastricht, Netherlands. Other photos of it in the EoE DB also carry captions suggesting locations of Mechelen or near Ghent, Belgium, both quite a distance west of Veldwezelt. One of our EoE members suggests that this is a loss on May 29, 1940, and that the code could be V4+FH. Does anyone have any info that would enable us to firmly establish the date, location and crew of this a/c. Based upon photos which appear to show the other side badly damaged by flak, there were likely crew casualties aboard.

Who can help? This will probably be an EoE Color Profile a/c if I can nail down the specifics of this incident.

Thanx,

Regards,

Larry Hickey

Hi, Larry

Probably nothing you do not have already - but possibly some ordered information from the loss lists can help eliminate some of these:

On 29.05.1940 I have 4 aircraft from the I./K.G.1 damaged or lost:

1. Here we have the name of the Beobachter or Flugzeugführer, and as it was one wounded and one dead crew member it should be possible to get more information

http://www.aviationhistory.no/ref_db...?lossid=137311

2. The same situation, we have the name of the Beobachter or Flugzeugführer, and as it was one wounded and one dead crew member it should be possible to get more information

http://www.aviationhistory.no/ref_db...?lossid=137312

3. There are no names in this reference - indicating that the crew had no members with officer rank, the location was reported as Gent. However - summing up all the corrections etc on this, it says that it was a duplicate entry regarding this loss, and that there were at 2 dead crew members, while the remaining 3 crew members returned, which should give us a possible means of identification

4. There are no names in this reference - indicating that the crew had no members with officer rank. However - summing up all the corrections etc on this, there were 1 dead crew member and one wounded crew member which should give us a possible means of identification. 3 members of the crew returned unharmed.

Hope this helps and do not add to the confusion. If anyone have further information on these losses, please respond so that the loss records can be updated.

Regards,
Andreas B

Andreas,

Thanks for trying to clarify this for me. I'm up to my eyeballs in project deadlines at the moment, but will study this information and give you my opinion as soon as I can get to it
