Bf 109E Engine Start Procedure
Hallo
I am trying to understand in detail the sequence of start engine procedure of Bf 109E. Here is description with pictures and english translation: http://tapi.tode.cz/bf109e_engine_start.pdf Steps 3) 5) and 8) (red color text) are not quite clear to me - especially location of controllers in cockpit. Appreciate any suggestion from "experten". Thx |

Re: Bf 109E Engine Start Procedure
Hi,
For 3 and 5 ... ? you need a good translation, first. For 8: Cylinders are supposed to be empty since to stop piston engines you don't "cut the contact" but close fuel admission (muffle) until the engine is stopped by lack of fuel. If you don't do it you will provoque a compression ignition (auto-allumage) which can damage the engine. To start it - since we are talking about that - it's the contrary. Cylinders being empty you must fill them with fuel. That's what's explained by point 8. This step is still in use with actual piston engined crafts. Nothing particular to the Bf 109. Just a manual injection pump actuator. Regards, Franck. |

Re: Bf 109E Engine Start Procedure
Thanks for reply Franck,
For 8: Yes, all piston engines needs to use "primer" before start. I understand the principle. But I am interested in how it was "practically" done in case of Bf 109 E. I think that idle primer knob is in depressed position. Pilot needs to pull it first and than push it to inject one "dosage" of fuel into cylinders. The red colored sentence from original manual then probably means that pilot must be sure after finishing the work with primer knob that the knob is again in depressed position, ie. it not remain pulled (there is probably no spring inside button). So correct loose translation of the last sentece from step 8 should probably be: Be sure that after finishing priming the knob lie on the fastening nut, ie. stay in depressed position. Beachte, daß nach Betätigung der Pumpe der Betätigungsknopf an der Führungsmutter anliegt. Last edited by Tapi73; 8th November 2013 at 15:34. |
