USAF Fighter Losses in History Med Air War Volume 2

I've just received my copy of "A history of the MEditteranean Air War-Vol2" by C. Shores et al.

While going through the chapters, I found an obvious error. The loss data for 2/Lt/ Harold C. Rideout Jr. is listed on page 423 and page 465. This is respectively November 2,1942 and December 1,1942. When I go to the NARA AAD site, I find that he was taken prisoner on Dec 16,1942. Now, the NARA site is sometime incorrect, but I think in this case they are correct.

Also, the comment that the Kittyhawk shot down by Lt. Schroer on Nov16,1942 could have been USAAF Lt. Joe Bell (p.453) is clearly in error as Joe Bell was shot down on Nov. 18 not Nov. 16,1942.

Carlos, just out of curiosity, the man sounds like, with that rank, a USAAF pilot. How is this possible since there were no American units in theater at that date? Have I misunderstood?
