RAF combat losses in Iraq, May 1941?
I just finished to read the memoirs of Martin Drewes: Sand und Feuer. Jagdflieger im Irak und über Deutschland (2011).
I wonder if anyone knows RAF records to confirm these claims of "Special Command Junck" in Irak: Between 16.-19.5.1941 the Bf 110 pilots made according to Drewes successfull raids against Habbaniyya airfield: - on 16.5.1941 one Hurricane and two more planes was destroyed on the ground on the British airbase located between Eufrat and Habbaniyya lake - on further attacks during 16.5.-19.5.1941 several British aircraft were destroyed on the ground. On 20.5.1941 Drewes mentions that he shot down one Gloster Gladiator in air combat near Fallujah. |

Re: RAF combat losses in Iraq, May 1941?
Hello,
Suggested reading - "Hidden Victory" by AVM A.G. Dudgeon, CBE DFC. and "Dust Clouds in the Middle East" by Chris Shores. Some of the RAF losses: 16-5-41 - 94 Sqn Gladiator pilot, Flg Off G.D.F.Herrtage killed. 16-5-41 - Audax - K7524 crew killed. 20-5-41 - 70 Sqn Victoria/Valentia K2808 straffed on ground by Me110's.as were a Blenheim, a DC-2 and other a/c. Drewes 1st claim was a claim in error. Four Gladiators were cover for an Audax that had force landed, Sgt. Smith's Gladiator was attacked by five Me110's but escaped with some damage. Good hunting Alex |
