Luftwaffe at Chartres
All:
The 368th FG (9th AF) was stationed at Chartres (A-40) from 23 August to 11 September 1944. My Great Uncle's photo albums contain numerous pictures that I believe to be the Group HQ area at the Chateau Vauventriers just North of the field at Chartres/Champhol (see attached). I believe the chateau is the wooded area with structures in the upper right of an 8th AF post-strike photo (available online at http://www.8thafhs.com/media/photos/chartres-af-SP.jpg). Based on Larry deZeng's excellent Luftwaffe Airfields 1935-45 (see pgs. 92-95 for Chartres entry), it appears that this same chateau was used as Luftwaffe HQ for units stationed at Chartres. Is anyone aware of any existing photographs of Luftwaffe personnel at the Chateau Vauventriers that would help confirm that the attached photos are the same location? As always, thanks in advance for any assistance. Best regards, Paul Dame |
