Schwarmführer fuselage band JG 301

Hello,

In one of Neil's recent falkeeins blog updates he showed a photo of a JG 301 Fw 190 with a fuselage band with two white stripes that he described as an ID for a Schwarmführer.

I have not seen similar markings before and that this is a Schwarmführer marking is new to me. Is this a JG 301 specific or a general marking? Where there other, similar markings used to indicate e.g. a Staffelführer?

Hello,

Perhaps this was a Fw 190 from J.G. 300 with the Blue/White/Blau fuselage band, which was transferred to the J.G. 301 and the band was do not paint over with the Yellow/Red. Only a assumption.

Remarkably these two white stripes are similar to the markings of the aircrafts from blind-flying schools.
Maybe as a marking to keep distances in a flying formation?

It's exactly what Neil Page is explaining and the reason for Roger question ... the rest of your sentence is mere speculation.
I'm sorry to tell you it like that, but .. you know .. I'm French. However, it's a good question, but stick to Neil comments will be better.
Neil's comment comes from interview with former unit's pilots ...

As far as I remember, yes it is the only one known.

And up to now it was though to be an experimental fuselage band "RVT" for III./JG301 before they use the usual red/yellow one

But Neil Page probably got more information since.

Dear all,

thank you very much for your thoughts and information. A Schwarmführer identification band, experimental unit band or blind flying marking would make sense. Strange that it is only documented on one aircraft so far.

I will publish a photo of a Bf 109 G in my next 'Captured Eagles' with black-white-black bands. However, it is not a JG 4 machine and the band has only half the width of the usual JG 4 black-white-black band. It may also not have been black, but dark blue. I was wondering if the band could also have been used as e.g. Schwarmführer identification.
