Unknown Emblem on a Bf 109 E
Dear All,
Can someone help me to identify the emblem sported on a Bf 109 E-1/E-3 "Yellow 1", as per the attached photo, downloaded from here http://www.vetrabotnik.narod.ru/Text.../Bf109_005.htm Have not come across it before. Could be a personal emblem, or an early war unit emblem, or... Any assistance in the matter will be highly valued. Regards, Sinisa |

Re: Unknown Emblem on a Bf 109 E
Hello Franck,
Many thanks for that. I did not realize that David was having it on his excellent site. We now have the manufacturer, BFW, and W.Nr. too - apparently 1950. Regards, Sinisa |

Re: Unknown Emblem on a Bf 109 E
Could have something to do with I./JG 233, which was founded at Bad Aibling in Upper Bavaria, an (almost) alpine region of Southern Germany. Badge shows a chamois' head, a well-known animal in that area.

This Bf-109 also has the rarer seen Revi 3 gunsight installed.

Re: Unknown Emblem on a Bf 109 E
Post No.5 refers. Roland, this is a Bf 109 E, to which I./JG 233 converted in April/May 1939. If it was related to the Gruppe at all, it would be under the name of I./JG 51. Furthermore, the motif does not represent chamois' head, but deer's head (i.e., der Hirsch), as correctly identified on David Weiss' site in Post No.2.

Re: Unknown Emblem on a Bf 109 E
Hello guys,
WNr 1950 was reported in a strenght-return for 3rd Staffel JG 51 in September 1939 at Bad Aibling. It was an Bf109E3 coded "yellow 1" with a DB 601 A/I engine WNr 10493. The airframe had collected 33.18 hours and the engine 39.03 hours at the time of the report. HTH Carl

Re: Unknown Emblem on a Bf 109 E
Sinisa
Since I am rather certain that David is using the word 'hirsch' in a rather sweeping general meaning, there is no European dear which looks like the emblem. The photos are not very good in relation to the emblem itself but to me the animal depicted mostly looks like a Rupicapra rupicapra (Gems or Chamois in English and French), which makes Roland in my mind totally correct. May I inquire which animal you have in mind Sinisa? Cheers Stig |

Re: Unknown Emblem on a Bf 109 E
Hello Carl,
Thank you for that. The aforementioned site also suggested JG 51, but this is much more precise info. Regards, Sinisa |
