RAF claims over Italian coast of Adriatic on 12.4.44.
In early morning of 12 April 1944 a Rotte of 2./NAGr.12 was intercepted by Spitfires 20 kilometers east of Ortona. Although the German planes successfully disengaged, one of them crashed at 5.00 into Adriatic, possibly as a result of battle damage. Any hint about the identity of RAF unit?

There are claims by a Spitfire IX of 1 SAAF Sqn, at 0630, off Ortona. Lt. Richard John Barnwell (SAAF), Spitfire IX JG318 AX-D, Me 109G damaged plus Me 109G destroyed. The reference is SR: Air 54/22755&6. Air 54 is a collection of microfilms of SAAF ORBs, held at the NA/PRO. The originals are presumably in South Africa. Enjoy! Frank.
