sub questions?

It has been said that a type VII or type IX U-boat could not reload the stern torpedo tubes very easily. Is this true?

Re: sub questions?

Hi John,

The first ten U-boats built of the type VII were fitted with a stern torpedo tube outside of the pressure hull, so they could not be reloaded while submerged. This was no longer the case after the introduction of the type VIIB with a normal stern torpedo tube.

Re: sub questions?

Thanks Rainer!

When were these 10 made?

Seems a rather dumb design. I guess they were loaded in port? Did engine and lack of room preclude putting the tubes internally?
