Help about Spitfire variant.

Hello to all spitfire experts.
I recently saw in an ORB the designation Spitfire Mk.Vb LF/LR
We all know what LF means
Any hint on LR?

Kind regards
Dimitris

Hello Dimitris,

From a previous reply posted here some years back.

"The LF means it was fitted with a low-altitude optimised engine (cropped blower).
The LR is "Long Range" meaning that this aeroplane was plumbed to carry an external 'slipper' tank under the fuselage (not all Mk Vs had this option).
The 'R' has nothing to do with 'Reconnaissance' or cameras."
