In my personal opinion the most impressive military airplanes of the WW2 calendar years were:

• 1939: Ju 87 Stuka (Blitzkrieg)
• 1940: Hurricane (Battle of Britain)
• 1941: Bf 109 (Barbarossa)
• 1942: SBD Dauntless (scourge of the carriers)
• 1943: Fw 190 (claim records on the Eastern front)
• 1944: P-51 Mustang (deep into the Third Reich)
• 1945: B-29 Superfortress (inferno)
• aircraft of the war: Il-2 Shturmovik (victory through tenacity)
