Ritterkreuzträger Kunze

I am interested in knowing more about Ofw Herbert Kunze from KG 26. Does anybody have information about this man ?? Why did he get the Ritterkreuz, where was he born and what units did he serve in ?

Re: Ritterkreuzträger Kunze

Evening Delmenhorst,

According to Rudi Schmidt's book "Achtung - Torpedo Los !" Ofw. Herbert KUNZE was a Beobachter in 8./KG 26. RK-Verleihung : 09/11/1944. He was killed during a 'LT-Einsatz gegen England' on 21/4/1945. LT stands for "LuftTorpdo" a Torpedo-attack. The rest of his crew : FF - Ofw. Zimmermann BF - Fw. Behrend and BM - Ofw. Weyhrauch. Unfortunately no first-names are given or known.
I hope this will help you.
Best wishes out a rainy Belgium,

Dirk

Re: Ritterkreuzträger Kunze

Hi DDT
That helps me a bit further. I have for a few years investigated the clash between KG 26 and Banff Strike Wing on the 21st of April 1945. There are so many conflicting information about this day.
By the way, I am sorry to hear that Belgium is rainy. I hope that it clears up within the next weeks. I am going to Belgium on summer vacation this year. My wife convinced me - belgian beer and chokolade.

My latest book 'Sea Eagles 2' covers this combat, albeit not in great detail. Trouble is loss reports were incomplete for that date
