Crash in the Tatras, 9 October 1944

On this date a Soviet transport aircraft crashed near Tatranské Zruby, in the Tatras, in Slovakia. 24 crew and passengers (Czechoslovak paratroops) died in the crash.

I would like to have more details about this crash, especially the aircraft type (Li-2 ?) and unit. The best would be to have a list of the casualties, but I am especially interested to know if one of them was Ladislav Pfliegel, the commander of the Second Czechoslovak Para Brigade, who died on this date in the Tatras.

Thanks in advance.

Laurent

Re: Crash in the Tatras, 9 October 1944

Hi Laurent,

I was fortunate to be a part of expedition that climbed the place last year. It is 50 metres below the top of the highest peak in Tatras...what an experience! I will check the names for U at home, will see if the man U R looking for was there.

http://www.kaso.ahoj.sk/the_15th_usaaf/activities.htm in the middle of the page, Li trips some photos for U.

best regards

Peter

Hi!
Exact date of crash is still unknown. It happened propably on night 13./14.10. or 14./15.10.1944. 1st Lt. (nadporučík) Ladislav Pfliegel was commander of artillery platoon.
See our research trip to crash site last year: http://www.kaso.ahoj.sk/the_15th_usaaf/ - activities.
Regards
Boris Súdny.
