Lt. Wallace Ellis - MIA 11-12-43 3rd PG
I noticed that there is no mention of this pilot in the latest MAW Vol4.
Here's a link to a Find A Grave mwntion https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...-clayton-ellis According to an earlier thread which went nowhere, he could not have been shot down over Corsica as this was Allied controlled by this date. |

Re: Lt. Wallace Ellis - MIA 11-12-43 3rd PG
The unit was based at Ajaccio/Campo del Oro, Corsica, 18 Oct-26 Nov 1943 according to this:
http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/foru...-made-patches/ There is a brief mention of him on this link (Search for Wallace): https://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/v.../european.html The statement is interesting: "Bud" Ellis served as a P-38 Reconnaissance pilot with the 12th Photo Squad, 3rd Reconnaissance Group, 12th Air Force. Killed over Corsica on November 12, 1943, his plane exploded after he returned from a mission over the Ploesti oil fields. He is buried in the Rome-Sicily American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy." The description may well contain some details of the loss, i.e. it exploded over Corsica while returning after possibly being hit on a mission. The mission may have been to Ploesti but perhaps could have been some other target, say in Italy. In the casualty list for the state of Maine, he is listed as KIA. RSwank, this is all good stuff. The last statement is interesting as that would make it a combat loss. It appears it should be included in MAW4

Basically none of the strategic operations by any of the Allied forces post November 1st 1943 are covered in MAW 4. Please read pages 7 and 8 again and you will get a better understanding what is in Vol 4 and what will be in later volumes. Cheers Stig |

Sorry, just received my copy and going through it slowly. My statement was based on the fact that other USAAF PR losses are reported in MAW4

Re: Lt. Wallace Ellis - MIA 11-12-43 3rd PG
Hi all
It is not in MAW 4 because I didn't know about it, and neither did Frank as he crashed in Allied lines hence no MACR. We are trying to track it for Vol 6. I know Chris says we were not covering strategic ops in Vol 4, as Stig correctly points out, but we have included all the PR losses upto the end of 1943 as it seemed to leave out half a dozen or so losses was pointless, unlike leaving out the beginning of the mass losses of the bombers. So both USAAF and RAF PR losses are included to the end of 1943, and some from memory into 1944. Cheers Russell |

Stig,
No problem. Only through asking do we gain answers. |
