Re: german he 111 crew

The crew was:
Lt Hans Folter-pilot
Maj Helmut Bertram-observer
Uffz Kurt von Holst-radio operator
Uffz Werner Lissmann-flt eng
They were shot down by Flak attacking Suez in He 111 H--5, Werk Nummer 3848 coded 1H+GM
Bertram was in command of II Gruppe/Kampfgeschwader 26. He would have been promoted later to Oberstleutnant. Iron Crosses were a very common award

Re: german he 111 crew

The crew's unit was II./KG 26 (Roman numerals). This distinction was important in how the Germans named their formations, so you could end up chasing the wrong unit if you miss it.

KG 26 (Arabic number) 26 was made up of four Gruppen (with Roman numbers). Each Gruppe was made up of three Staffeln (with Arabic numbers). 11./KG 26 (Arabic number) was a Staffel within IV./KG 26, which hadn't formed at the time your crew was taken prisoner.

Re: german he 111 crew

Just to add a few tidbits of info:
There is a book published in Australia called Stalag Australia. Its about the 1400 German PoWs that were moved to Australia during the war. Most of them captured on the high seas, North Africa early 1941 battles and a few from Crete and Greece. Lt Col Bertram was the highest ranking Luftwaffe PoW there. This info is from that book.
