Info needed on aircraft surrendered at Furth May 8.

Hey guys,

Question...

Is there a timeline of what aircraft surrendered on May 8, 1945 at Furth, along with a timeline? I am specifically looking for a group of 4 aircraft (probably the first wave), that consisted of 3 Me109s and 1 Fw190.

I know fo at least 3 Fw190s that surrendered there, but trying to narrow one down to the first group.

TIA

Mike

Mike,

This is what I found in 10th PRG records;

Fürth (R-28):

10th Photographic Group:
On May 8th, 1945 14 planes landed at R-28 Fürth (3 Ju 87’s, 8 Fw 190’s, 2 Me 109’s, 1 Si 104). A total of 26 pilot prisoners. The planes were escorted by the P-51 Mustangs of the Tac/R Squadrons.
162nd Tac/Rec Squadron:
06.55-09.20 hrs. 2x Fw 190 claimed by 1./Lt. Manuel W. Geiger and 2./Lt. Stanley F. Newman. Both Fw 190 bellied in, one at P-8722 and one at P-8717 at 07.15 hrs. (Olynyk: 6 miles E of Bischofteinitz)
13.00-15.05 hrs. 1x Me 109 forced to land on R-28 by Lt. Geiger and Lt. Newman.
15.00-16.45 hrs. 1x Fw 190 forced to land on R-28 by Lt. Conley and Capt. Young.
18.35-20.55 hrs. 1x Fw 190 forced to land on R-28 by Lt. Alm. 1x Me 108 directed to R-28 but enemy a/c turned around.
18.35-20.55 hrs. 1x Ju 52 seen, 1x unidentifed TE and twin fin a/c forced to land at R-28.
15th Rec Squadron:
15.00-18.00 hrs. Section met 3 Fw 190, 1 Ju 88, 1 Ju 188, 3 Me 109. One Me 109 landed at small field at O-9555 (pilot Sgt. Herbert Skowranek). One Me 109, one Ju 88, one Ju 188 escorted to R-43 (Nuremburg) were they landed 16.30 hrs. 3 Fw 190’s and one Me 109 met and escorted to R-28 where they landed.
17.15-19.45 hrs. 1x Me 109 claimed by F/O Julian Banieski. (Olynyk: Regensburg)
18.25-20.30 hrs. 1x Fw 190 claimed by 1./Lt. George R. Schroeder, 1x Fw 190 claimed by 1./Lt. Leland A. Larson. (Olynyk: L-2768, 8 miles NE of Radnitz)
12th Tec/Rec Squadron:
18.48-20.44 hrs. 1x Fw 190 shot down by 2./Lt. Robert C. Little, 12th TRS/10th PG . Total group of 5 Fw 190’s. (Olynyk: Q-2112 Passau).

Quite a puzzle.....I have not been able to link certain a/c to the specific landings mentioned in the 10th PRG reports.

John

Mike,

It is worth consulting the article written by Tom Ivie on this event in Steve Sheflin’s magazine “Airfoil”. Lots of photos of the aircraft with detailed text and captions.

Cheers,

David

Mike,

Hopefully Steve will enter the discussion with more information. I will take a look tomorrow and see if the article can identify the aircraft in question.

Cheers,

David

I believe we have an (almost) clear list of a/c that landed at Fürth. We do not know the sequence of landing times.

Reagrds,

John

Re: Info needed on aircraft surrendered at Furth May 8.

I own a Fw 190 control stick that Stanley Newman removed from one of these Fw 190s. It may well be from the belly landed Fw 190 that he claimed in the early morning of 8 May 1945. There exists photos of this machine, but I don’t know if its W.Nr. or any other detail is known.
