P-51 shot down on 22 June 1944

On this date 2/Lt CH Stewart of the 353rd FS/354th FG was shot down by a Bf109G. Can anyone identify his assailant? The LW unit may have suffered casualties in the combat.

Keith

Re: P-51 shot down on 22 June 1944

Bartels was 11./JG 27 not 1./JG 27 and between 1405 and 1428hrs, he and another pilot claimed two P-47s, a P-51 and a Spitfire. There was loads going on that day and yes, 3 Bf 109G-6s were lost in unknown locations/Angers (also 9./JG 27 lost one that day while I./JG 27 lost 3). A time for Stewart's loss would help one way or another

Re: P-51 shot down on 22 June 1944

It would indeed but I don't have it. Reading between the lines I expect it to be early afternoon because the squadron was moving locations. Bartels has a big question mark over his score as you know but in this case he may have been correct over the claim for a P-51.

I note that 10./JG27 and 12./JG27 lost pilots on this date. I assume I./JG27 (do you mean 1./JG27 or I/JG27?) and 9./JG27 didn't have any pilot casualties? If so then JG27 lost seven Bf109s, and at least two pilots. The USAAF aces Dahlberg and Eagleston both claimed victories in a combat with Bf109s.

One was from 1./JG 27, the others from I./JG 27 do not specify the Staffel. 9./JG 27 saw Uffz Fritz Meier killed. 10./JG 27 lost one pilot missing, one wounded. 12./JG 27 saw one pilot killed

According to the MACR, Stewart was lost around 1335 hours. The German J-1509 report says he came down 1 1/2 km southwest of Aubigny.

Re: P-51 shot down on 22 June 1944

According to the German Namentliche Verlustmeldung the crash place was 1,5 km southwest of Aubigny (= Aubigny-aux-Kaisnes), 16,5 km southwest of St. Quentin. According to the German casualty report J-1509 the crash occurred a.m., the exact time is unknown, as a result of touching a line pole.

Regards
Leo
