Re: P38 44-23627

Pape was not missing in action even though a Missing Aircrew Report was completed. He wrote a letter in March of 1946 explaining what happened and the reason he was reported as missing. He landed at Tours due to mechanical issues. He stated the problem arose when other personnel failed to communicate the information back to the 367th and he was never behind enemy lines nor lost due to enemy action. MACR, with the letter included, available for free from the NARA website, is 10567.

Re: P38 44-23627

According to Bishop, Hay et al he had a compass failure and a radio which all of a sudden couldn't perform OK (weak signal).
Luckily for him he managed to chose an appx right direction "home".

Cheers
Stig
