Awesome clip of Me 262 & He 219 being strafed by 8th AF aircraft

Hi guys

this remarkable gun camera footage is a great find for me as it is directly relevant to my He 219 project (see 2 minutes onwards for He 219). What I would like to know is where the airfield was... this is why I was asking the other day on the forums about Lt. J.R. McDonald, 388th FS, 55th FG. I believe the second clip (Me 262 footage) was from Fliegerhorst Giebelstadt, but am not convinced that the McDonald He 219 footage is from the same airfield. If I could pin down exactly where McDonald was on Jan 14, 1945 then obviously we could ID the airfield...

Kent pointed out the other day that on this date McDonald claimed a Me 262 destroyed on the ground at Parchim (Eighth Air Force Victory Credit Board reports). Would the He 219 footage also be Parchim? Why then would he not mention the He 219?

Anyway enjoy the clips. I would recommend changing the quality to 480, and slowing the footage down by 50%.

The last segment really caught my eye, the B-17 on flames...

Interesting footage for sure. Gives new meaning to being 'on the deck'.

The airfield with He 219 is similar to Brandis, but it's just a guess. I don't think He 219 was there

Time 00:39 - check the left corner - Me 262 ready to start/taxiing on runway?

Faenor: with that Me 262, freezing the picture I think that the canopy may be open. I wouldn’t swear to it at this image quality though. Add to that five(?) more in the hangar and another in the snow-covered revetment.

Matolion: If those are He 177s in the first sequence then Brandis would be a possibility (although I don’t know if any were left there by January 1945) and large numbers were kept at Fassberg late in the war too.

Seems Flak is not so "dense" , looks like there is no, nd Potez 63, seems to be a prey of choice strafed 2 times ...

Hi Nick,

On 13 January 1945, at 13:30 German time, Uffz. Alfred Färber of 1./KG 51 was taking off from Flugplatz Giebelstadt to make a werkstattflug in Me 262 A-1a/Jabo W.Nr. 110601 9K+EH when two American P-51Ds made an extremely low strafing attack. The Americans were 1Lt. Walter J. Konantz in P-51 D "Saturday Night" CL-P and 1Lt. Roy D. Miller in P-51 D "Skylark" CL-S both with the 338 FS/55 FG. These screen shots are taken from Miller's cine film. Konantz shot down and killed Färber just outside the airfield boundary and five aircraft were claimed damaged.
