111th TRS F-6C query
I recall someone somewhere --can't remember where I saw it--asking for info on an F-6C 42-103578 coded "NJ" ; has anyone seen this post ? I'd like to help if possible. The 111th is an interesting subject.
Thanks Nick |

Re: 111th TRS F-6C query
Thanks Col. It was a long time ago ! incidentally the "red" tail stripes I said on some 111th F-6s in 69TRG were green. The post on ww2aircraft.net ( havn't been on there for some years) asked about the US Navy pilots (eventually 11) attached to the squadron in S. France; these were from Cruiser Sqn.8 (VCS 8) from the light cruisers "Brooklyn" CL40 and "Philadelphia" CL41 which had SOC / SON Seagulls and 2 catapults. They were supplied with F-6Cs with "N" codes as on "NJ", they were F-6C-1 and -5NTs from the Dallas factory (unpainted) and had production numbers on the rudders as did some Dallas P-51Cs (P30, P32 and P40--I think P32 was F-6C-5-NTs). The Navy pilots returned to cruisers at the end of August.
The various code systems in the 111th depended on the parent unit, XII TAC to Oct. 44 ( C+ letter then N+ letter in S. France in Aug.) then attached to Provisional Recon. Group (still N+letter) then to the 69TRG in April 45 (with a regularised code of "N5") and tail stripes-- but few aircraft. The Dallas-built F-6Cs were converted at Modification Centres in the US but some were done in service. Earlier 111th Mustangs in N. Africa and Italy (4-cannon P-51-NA) had Flight letters A, B, C plus aircraft letter. They were Olive Drab with their "Snoopers" insignia on noses. Nick |
