Lt Col Huie Lamb, P-51 pilot, 78th FG
from Facebook:
American Air Museum in Britain tsoSedornp3 We are saddened to learn of the passing of 78th Fighter Group veteran Huie Lamb last week, aged 101. Huie was a valued supporter of the American Air Museum in Britain. In fact, the P-51 Mustang on display at the museum was painted to represent Huie’s second P-51, the “Etta Jeanne II,” which he flew from Duxford as part of the 78th. In 2014, Huie returned to Duxford to help unveil the aircraft. Huie Lamb, Jr. was born in 1924 and grew up in Abilene, Texas. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in early 1943 and graduated from flight school the following year. Huie flew 61 combat missions in the P-47 Thunderbolt and the P-51 Mustang from Duxford. He shot down two and a half aircraft in the air and was responsible for the destruction of three aircraft on the ground. His victories included two German jets. On December 29, 1944, in his first mission flying a P-51, he suffered a mechanical failure and crashed into the channel. He was picked up by Air Sea Rescue from Martlesham Heath. Huie was discharged in 1945 but was recalled during the Korean War, although he never flew combat missions. He remained with the Air Force Reserves for nearly 30 years. He obtained a business degree from the University of Texas in 1950 and owned a car business. Our thoughts are with Huie's family and friends. Blue skies and tail winds, Huie.
