One guess is Hptm Günther Scholz, who was Gruppenkommandeur III./JG5 from 3.42 to 6.43.
I can't remember having seen Scholz' F-4 with a III-gruppe circle though.

Yes, it is the a/c of Hptm. Günther Scholz. The photo was taken in Petsamo winter 42/43, in the background the so called "Erlöserberg" (relief mountain), on top Ju 88s, I presume from KG 30 "Adler".

Here two other photos of G. Scholz (1 in a Bf 109 E-7) and with his personal emblem, a little girl. BTW, Günther Scholz is still with us, he lives in Chemnitz.

Andreas, can you pin the date? It's rather interesting from a markings point of view. Just wondered about that gruppe circle. Or is the introduction known?

The really interesting detail in the photo is the Bf 109E, yellow 8, seen in the right background. Must be one of the last Emils in front line service in the Luftwaffe.
