Two Mosquito INTRUDER claims
Good night to all!
I am looking to the claims submitted on two nights against German Night-Fighter aces: 1) 12/13 September of 1944. The Bf 110 G of Georg-Hermann Greiner from .11/NJG 1 was shot down. The rear gunner Obfw Rolf-Armim Kissing was found dead when Greiner landed his plane at Dortmund. I found on the NJG 1 records that this event may have ocurred on the night of 17/18 September! What was the correct date? There is a RAF Claim that matches this loss? I do know that 418 Squadron and particularly W/C Russ Bannock operated in the vicinity of Dortmund this night, but he seems to have claimed another German machine. 2) It seems that on the night of 16/17 March 1945 a Mosquito Mark XXX ( which serial number, which codes ?? ) from 239 Squadron flown by F/L Dennis Hughes shot down the Junkers Ju 88 G-6,werk 620 046 C9+BB flown by Maj. Hoffmann. Was this the only claim that night? Could another Mosquito pilot have claimed this machine? Thank you for all enlightment on these two misterious ocurrencies Adriano |

Re: Two Mosquito INTRUDER claims
Bannock and Bruce made the only claim that night (Sept 12/13, 1944) for a Mosquito from 418 in the vicinity of Kitzingen. The combat reports states the aircraft as unidentified. During the attack, they did see numerous hits on the rear fuselage and the starboard engine explode. They passed over the target and observed a large flash on the ground, having lost sight of the aircraft in the turn. They couldn't see any fire on the ground.
Of the 11 Mosquitos dispatched that night, Bannock is the only one to have fired at any enemy aircraft. HTH Mark Proulx |

Re: Two Mosquito INTRUDER claims
Hello Mark!
I am a bit shocked with the info you put! Only Russ Bannock fired this night? As far as I know and as far as I have found on my small amount of books ( I am no hot shot like some guys here on the forum ) there were 3 ( up to now ) Bf 110 Gs German losses: 1) .11/ NJG 1 - werknummer???? - G9+?? - Hptm Georg-Hermann Greiner and his bordfunker who died 2) .5/ NJG 1 - werknummer???? - G9+??? - Uffz Manfred Sacher and Uffz Wilhelm Wurschitz ( fate unknown )? Where were they shot down??? Hour?? 3) Schulstaffel NJG 6 - werknummer????? - codes 2Z+QX Machine flown by: Fw Hans Schurich ( WIA ), Uffz Albert Windolph ( + ) and Ogfr. Kremer ( ok ). Shot down East of Roedelsee airfield. Someone on another FORUM said to me that this was probably the claim of Russ Bannock, although I do not know the location of this German A/D. Do you know where the claim of Bannock was submitted? At which hour? Glad for your help and answers...Were the other German crews lost due to engine problems or shot down by their own FLAK? Yours very friend and sincerely Adriano |

Re: Two Mosquito INTRUDER claims
Re the 5/NJG1 aircraft.
According to 'Confounding the Reich' by Bowman/Cushing, this was Me 110 GN+EN Wrk Nr. 440384 flown by Oberleutnant Gottfied Hanneck. His crew were Uffz. Erich Sacher (radar/radio op) and Uffz. Willi Wurschitz (normally a radar op but acting as air gunner). They were shot down by F/Lt. Bill House and F/Sgt. Robert Denison MacKinnon of 85 Sqn. The aircraft crashed at Birresborn in the Eifel at 23.35hrs 13/9/44 killing the crew. Hanneck baled out and landed east of Pruem in the Eifel. Hope this helps Eddie |

Re: Two Mosquito INTRUDER claims
Yes, Bannock was flying the only 418 Mosquito that night that encountered German aircraft. This is suported in a number of different 418 documents. He was flying his usual aircraft HR147, coded THZ and named Hairless Joe. The combat report states the German aircraft as an unidentified twin engine a/c shot down near Kitzingen A/F at 0221 hrs. Weather at the time was clear with some ground haze. Bannock did make a claim as a "probably destroyed" but was most certain the a/c crashed as the starboard engine exploded and resulting flash on the ground.
