Re: Help with two Battle of Britain losses

Brian,

No Ju88 lost by I./KG51 on 11 June 1940 only one returning 40% damaged but herewith details of the 9./KG4 casualty you wanted:

9./KG4 Junkers Ju88A-1 (4044). Shot down by Sergeant E. Richardson of No. 242 Squadron during sortie to attack convoy off the east coast and broke up attempting to ditch 15 miles off Lowestoft 6.55 p.m. Also engaged by Flying Officer G. P. Christie. Oberlt Fritz Wagner, Oberlt Hans Geissler, Uffz Franz Müller, and Flgr Walter Kostors missing. Aircraft 5J+HT lost.

Brian,

That's too general a question for me to attempt to answer right now. Sorry.

Re: Help with two Battle of Britain losses

Peter,

Thanks for getting back. I was working from 'Battle of Britain Then and Now' which gives that on 11th July I/KG 51 lost an NCO crew off Start Point this is the one I think was attacking an RN Destroyer, and another which crashed at Vernevil killing one (Ofw. Ruttell ?) and injuring three.
On the 12th a KG 51 Ju 88 crahed at Villaroche killing the crew and on the 13th the crew of Oblt Kasper were reported missing.
If you have any crew/aircraft details of these I would be very grateful,

Regards

Brian

Re: Help with two Battle of Britain losses

Brian,

Fair enough, but your original question was in relation to 11 June 1940.

All I can add to the details as published in BoBT&N is as follows:

It was the pilot, Oberfw Josef RATTEL, of 3./KG51 who died in a crash at Verneuil due to engine failure during return from a sortie on 12 July 1940. Names of the rest of the crew are unknown to me as records for this unit are incomplete for the period.

The 6 Staffel crew missing from a reconnaissance over Southampton on 13 July 1940 was as follows:

6./KG51 Junkers Ju88A. Failed to return from reconnaissance sortie to Southampton and believed crashed in the English Channel. (Ff) Oberlt Fritz Kasper, (Beo) Uffz Konrad Labermeier, (Bf) Fw Wilhelm Zimmermann, and (BSch) Gefr Kurt Geiger missing. Aircraft 9K+CP lost.
