Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi Guys

Is there anyway perhaps that the chaps who have id'd (captioned) the colour photos posted ^^ may have been using the Rolfe/Ketley book as reference with (wrong?) 9./KG76 upward arrows emblem? I mean there is no visible fuselage code to confirm the Staffel? What do you think guys?

Clint

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi, Clinton...

Well, anything is possible. I've noticed that the picture Byron posted, of the Do17 with the 'white' spinner, has an interesting caption... it states that the machine was 9./KG76 and that the port propellor (covered) was yellow... X-ray vision... a wonderful thing!

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi obdl3945

What is the current rules/understanding for the spinner/stripe colours? What colour for what staffel? I'm still quite new and learning the complicated ways of Luftwaffe markings?

Thanks

Clint

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Just a final push! Wondering if anyone has any new thoughts or ideas on what the 5./KG76 emblem is? Do you think that there is justifiable evidence to show the upward 3 arrow emblem as being 5./KG76's emblem for an illustration I am doing. I would very much like to include an emblem.

Thanks in advance for your time and Merry Xmas!

Clint

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

More confusion: In Blitz Then & Now Volume 2 this image shows a Ju88 & crew sporting the upward 3 arrow emblem but it is captioned as being 9./KG76 F1+BT (F1+AT in background?). This is getting strange as we have quite good evidence for this emblem belonging to either 9 or 5 staffel KG76?

Attachment 4555

Presumably we can pretty much take for granted that the guys in the photo are the guys in mentioned in the caption who were lost in F1+BT of 9./KG76. I suppose the only question is what are the chances of them not standing in front of their own Ju88 as no code is visible for conclusive identity?

Any thoughts? What is 5./KG76's emblem???

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi, Clint...

Can't really add too much to this thread at present, other than to say your photograph was probably taken prior to the raid on Liverpool and Hull on the night of Wednesday 7 May/Thursday 8 May, 1941. Info from Larry de Zeng and Doug Stankey's Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe 1933 - 1945 Vol2, page 236, would seem to indicate this. The information is also provided under the section relating to III.Gruppe/KG76.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but very tired and it's time to head to bed in this part of the world... well past midnight! Hope this finds you well .

Regards,

Paul

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Thankyou Paul for the additional info. I wonder if we will ever get to the bottom of this?

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi guys,

please don`t forget that on 6.7.40 III./KG28 became new II./KG76 and II.KG76 (Stuka) became III./StG77.

Regards

Robert
