Good find Franck! And amazing it certainly is! So can we add JG1 to the other Jagdwaffe units experimenting with camouflage following Poland or is this just a 'one off'?

I wonder how much this one will go for......

Re: eBay: one Bf 109E-3 with amazing camouflage

Hello,

Jochen Prien and I have discussed this one. It is unique as far as we know, and we've seen a lot of I./JG1 photos from that period. He notes that this is at Krefeld, according to the writing on the back, which makes this early 1940, vs the fall of 1939, as I'd originally thought. The light areas appear to me to be either 02 or 65 patches on the standard 1939-style two-tone green camouflage.

There are still a few surprises out there.

Regards,

Larry Hickey

Re: eBay: one Bf 109E-3 with amazing camouflage

OK Guys!

Thanks to confirm my 100% thoughts!
And thanks for "Krefeld" (didn't read back photo) ... Correction I did, but was unable to understand.

However: An important point to discuss; if you want.

Wing tips are painted - upper and under - with a colour which is lighter than the habitual blue AND it seems there is a fuselage band too. White? War games during this period?

It's a pity we don't have other views ....

Regards, Franck.

Franck

Must admit I cannot see the wing tips painted or the fuselage band as a different colour.

Starboard wing tip I think is just light/shadow. No clear definition.
Port wing, I think this is just the light RLM02/65? bleeding over the surface.
Likewise the band - just part of the RLM02/65 patches.

Shame can't see the Bf109E behind as well.

regards

Mark

This 109 has a similar "shade variation" under the wingtip

Re: eBay: one Bf 109E-3 with amazing camouflage

Franck I do see what you mean as a fuselage band, but think that it probably isn't one, rather, like Mark I think it is a large expanse of RLM 65. Likewise the 'white' wing tips I think are also RLM 65.

Even without white fuselage and wing tips none-the-less this is a remarkable machine. As I write 30.50 Euros, how much on the final bid?

Re: eBay: one Bf 109E-3 with amazing camouflage

What appears to be the lighter wing tips on the underside is where they have over painted the original small outer crosses with fresh RLM65 before applying the oversized crosses. The uppersurface probably looks the same but with a fresher application of 70 or 71 to cover the small upper surface crosses also before the oversized crosses were applied on the top.
