I read that the raid of 24th October was led by Capt. Franco Bassi of 3 Sqd. (vet. of Spanish Civil War ) but could not find confirmation that he was the CO. of the 3rd Sq.

Yes, the Squadriglia commander was capitano Francesco Bassi.
He is portrayed in two of the well known color pictures published by the german magazine SIGNAL.
