Fragments of a DB605 … but which version?

Hi,

These last months I've slowly and painfully taken out parts of a DB605 engine from the ground, and I wonder if someone has some clues that would help ID the version of the engine, that could maybe help a little to ID the plane itself.

Here are some pictures of the most relevant parts:

Exhaust valve and port: note the amazing conditions of the exhaust valve, its has only been water washed and lightly bead blasted

Partial number: I think it might be 605.100-001, reference part of the crankshaft housing, number seen on the left side of the engine.

This is the front end of the left cylinder block:

After bead blasting, a stamped serial appeared on it:

Anyone knows what it means? I assume L stands for links (left) ? So far it is the only serial I have for the whole plane, I hope it will help!

Last part, looks like a gun synchro interruptor, but can't identify it, and it has no numbers on it.

Stamped on one side: "Franz Lange Berlin"
And on the other side: "Gerat Nr ?9-7015A-1 ??, Der Einsatz hat ??gene FI Nr, FI 32606-1"

It might be an engine accessory, or part of the cockpit instrumentation, I've looked all over the Ersatz-teil liste of the F and G, there are close Fi numbers, but stille no match.

Could You say something more about area and crash place ? Which units serve arround this place ?
Some info. regarding period is also usefull for ID and type used a/c.

It might be nothing, but I have several DB605A-1s and A-1/Tp’s with Motornummern fairly close to the numbers on your recovered DB605 part: 011 04126, 011 04293, 011 04314, 011 0433X (yours), 011 04408, 011 044XX and 011 04515.

Also, it looks to me like there might a portion of a number “7” partially broken off on the right corner of your part. This might make it a Henschel F/M, Kassel-built DB605A-1 with a Motornummer of 011 04337.

Do You know somewhere exist list of used DB605 motors with ID for units or connected to a/c werk numbers ?
How is possible ID pilot, unit, etc. on base engine serial number ?
Somebody know ? Is it possible ?
I wonder if Deimler Benz has got archive documents which connect engine with serial/werk numbers produced aircrafts ?

Kris,

I did the opposite approach for the Denmark He219 since one of the DB603E is identified. I contacted Deutsches Museum Archiv about Heinkel aircraft records and any possibility of records pertaining to DB603E engines related to aircraft frames.

They were very timely and eager to help with their responses, but they could not locate anything related, noting that most of the Heinkel Aircraft Company documents were destroyed in WWII.

I recall attempting to identify a source at Daimler to see if and where there would be an archive contact, but could not find any.

Even if clues are scarce, I think the crash occured during the summer of 1944
JG 26 at this time was in Rambouillet, 25km north of the crash site.
I'm gathering all the infos I can to ID plane and pilot, and to find a crash date, but I'm still far from it!

I also tried to ask DB about help with ID - and they also can not to find interesting me data in archive.
But finally I recognized with Forum friends pilot and wrack on base technical data plate with Werk Numer of a/c.

Maybe in case of Fabrizio (part with serial number) they will have positive answer ?

Regarding the plates, believe me, I am picking EVERY little fragment on the site from months and months, some are smaller than a nail, aluminium and steel mixed.
Finding the werknummer is at the moment my biggest dream!
