Jawina Dowbor

In the book Bloodlands there is mention of a Polish female pilot Jawina Dowbor who according to one account was shot down by the Germans then taken prisoner by the Soviets and shot at Katyn on 21 or 22 April 1940. The katyn massacre site has her name as Jawina Lewanowska. It looks like Dowbor was her maiden name. Was she really fly any missions in September 1939? and get shot down by the Germans? I am sort of curious on this. Thanks in advance.

Re: Jawina Dowbor

The correct name is
Janina Lewandowska, nee Dowbor-Musnicka.
There is a substantial entry for her in the Polish Wikipedia (and lesser ones in several other languages, but not in English).

It seems that the shoot-down story is not corroborated by other sources/authors.
