Role of 10/ZG26 during 1942

Hi,

What was the operational role of 10/ZG26 during 1942? It was equipped with the bomber Do 17Z and I have not found any explanation on the net why this was used by a Zerstörer-unit.

Thanks in advance,
Peter

Judging from http://www.ww2.dk/air/zerstorer/zg26.htm these Do 17Z may have been night fighters operating in North Africa.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds likely that 10/ZG26 was a night fighter unit but so far I have only seen photos of a Do 17Z-1 bomber used by 10/ZG26.

The unit 10./ZG 26 was formed with Do 17Z bombers during spring 1942, it wa based at Crete and performed escort missions for German navy convoys between Greece and Crete.

Later in 1942 the Staffel became re-equipped with the Ju 88C-6 and moved to bases at Sicily, the kind of missions remained the same.

Merlin
Thanks for the reply. It seems like the Do 17Z was a stopgap until the more potent Ju 88C-6 arrived.
Regards,
Peter
