Ju 290 over Pitomnik

Good Evening,

maybe anybody could help.
The end of January 1943 a Ju 290 was attacked on the final appraco to Pitomnik. The machine was intercepted by LaGG -3 and got extensive damage. It was decided to abort the Mission and return to Base.

This is the only Information I have. Has someone more and better informations ?

Regards Rüdiger

Re: Ju 290 over Pitomnik

Pitomnik airfield fell to the Soviets on January 16th, so the end of the January date must be incorrect? I am only aware of Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 200 using Ju 290 during Stalingrad airlift (they flew from Stalino).

Hello Jim P. an Simast,

you are right, the date is incorrect. It must be the 13. 01.1943.
My Information comes from Monogram Close-up 3 ( Ju 290) from 1975. It should be a second Machine an Ju 290 A-0, but shurely ist not the V-1 with Pilot Hänig.

Re: Ju 290 over Pitomnik

I have a note that on 13-1-43 Ju90 V8 wn 4920 of KGr.z.b.V. 200 was damaged by a LaGG 3 over Stalingrad and had to return to Germany for repairs, crew of Maj. Wiskrant unharmed. I think this came from a softback publication on the Ju90 which is probaly packed in my loft, I do not think there was a GQM entry on this one so minimal damage ?
Hopefully someone may have more on this or be able to confirm,,

Regards
Brian Bines

Checked the Luftwaffe Officer Career Summary and there was a Maj. Hugo Wiskandt

Re: Ju 290 over Pitomnik

This was Ju 290 A-1, 0152 SB+QB. The a/c landed in Pitomnik, was provisionally repaired and returned to Stalino with a couple of wounded men.

Heuser

It is difficult to know if you are correcting Brians statement under post 5 or if you are making a general reply to the basic and initial question by Rüdiger.

Also when replying, do you have the exact date of the incident with SB+QB?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Ju 290 over Pitomnik

Hello Stig,

13.01.43 is the correct date; a story of the whole incident (incl. photos of SB+QB in Stalino, the wreck of Ju 290 V1 in Pitomnik as well as a report about the damages of SB+QB) was published in the book "Die großen Dessauer" by Karl Kössler and Günther Ott - IMHO still the reverence (secondary) source regarding the development/operations/losses of Ju 89, 90, 290 and 390...

Heuser
