Siegfried Freytag ditching July 27,1942

On both the LW Officer Database and Shore's "Spitfires over Malta" have Siegfried Freytag ditching on this date and being picked up by a Do 24.

However, the JG-77 history make no mention of this. Any corroboration?

Not corroboration, but the only "likely suspect" I have is Bf 109F4 WNr.13040 of the 3./JG 77, "Notlandung nach Luftkampf" with Spitfire over La Valetta. 100% loss. The location is given as Comiso. The other losses for JG 77 on this date are other named pilots, or (non-named) taxiing accidents.

It seems the Gen.Qu.6.Abt. have omissions in the Mediterranean. We've come across other (100%) losses where we have names, dates and sometimes photographs, yet apparently nothing made it into the Gen.Qu.6.Abt. records.

"Research is ongoing."

Wasn't Lt. Freytag with 1./JG-77? However, I agree that 3./JG-77 could readily lend an airplane.

..same 'incident' appears in Jean-Louis Roba's article "Siegfried Freytag, un soldat perdu" in the magazine "Histoire de Guerre" issue 46, April 2004
