JG2 Hptm Egon MAYER aircraft ?

Hello,

I would like to know what was the aircraft used by Hptm Egon MAYER the 14th of July, 1943 ? (Me109 or Fw190, werk nummer...)

And what was his usual aircraft during his time ?

Any help will be appreciated...

Thanks in advance

Best Regards

Loic

But without a loss with his name attached or his Flugbuch, next to impossible to identify with any certainty without photos or some other type of documentation.

Re: JG2 Hptm Egon MAYER aircraft ?

During July 1943 the Stab/JG 2 replaced its Fw 190A-5s with the A-6 version. The Stab had one A-6 on strength at the beginning of the month and this was most likely Mayer's mount. The Chevrons and Bars of the Stab were also replaced by green numbers when Oesau was Kommodore and Mayer replaced him on 1 July. Oesau was flying a "Green 13" edged in yellow and possibly Mayer was also flying a machine so designated. I have not seen a photo of the rudder with his 68th and 69th kills which he scored over two B-17s on the 14th of July.

Mayer was a Major on that day.

Peglar:

Mayer's rudder has 62 victories on it and the symbol of Kommandeur of III./JG 2 is ahead of the cross. The B-17 kills are represented by double bars with a large American star insignia. His 62nd kill, a Typhoon, was scored on 14 Feb 43.

While the Oesau machine you are referencing was 'green 13', I don't think that one can say that this became the norm with any certainty for Stab/JG 2 since, JG 2 was notorious for not reporting codes with losses, and from 1944, the few codes known were in black (Ubben & Buhligen for instance).

Hauptmann Egon Mayer aircraft?

Hello Peglar

In case you might be interested that photograph is of Fw 190 A-5 "White <<" (W.Nr. 0155 851). I have seen a pair of photographs claimed to be of a Fw 190 A-4/U7 that he is said of have flown in spring 1943 but have no idea if there is any truth to that statement as these are of rather poor quality.

Horrido!

Leo
