Mauri Maunula, a respected Finnish World War II veteran and one of the last surviving military pilots of his generation, has passed away at the age of 103, according to Lentoposti.
During the war, Maunula served as a traffic, reconnaissance, and fighter pilot. The first photograph shows a Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 at Syväri in 1943, reflecting the aviation history with which his wartime service was associated.
Beyond his military career, Maunula became a distinguished member of Pilvenveikot, a veteran aviators’ association founded in 1976. He later worked as a trainer and inspection pilot, continuing his connection to aviation long after the war.
In an interview with Iltalehti conducted between August and September, Maunula reflected on the peace that followed the Continuation War. After the devastating losses suffered by Finnish pilots, peace brought a profound sense of relief. He also recalled that the celebrations came later, while remembering an early sense of honor connected to the evacuation of Värtsilä.
Maunula was known not only for his service but also for his sharp wit and engaging personality. He made a lasting impression on Finnish television audiences and was warmly celebrated by Jenni Haukio during Finland’s Independence Day festivities in 2018. At the age of 97, he performed the ballad “Ääninen yö” for Haukio, who thanked him with a heartfelt hug.
His life also brought him into contact with some of Finland’s most significant historical figures. In 1943, he met Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim twice: first during a cadet course promotion at the Presidential Palace, and later at a fellow pilot’s birthday celebration in Mikkeli. Maunula fondly recalled saluting Mannerheim with an alder sword he had fashioned himself, a moment that amused the marshal.
Perhaps one of the most poignant episodes of his life came in 1951, following Mannerheim’s death. Then a 30-year-old captain, Maunula was asked to join the crew tasked with flying the marshal’s remains back to Finland. Despite his personal commitments, he accepted the duty, with his wife’s support.
Mauri Maunula leaves behind a legacy of military service, dedication to aviation, and a personality remembered with affection. His long life connected Finland’s wartime generation with those who came afterward, preserving memories of sacrifice, comradeship, and the journey from war to peace.
May his memory live on.
