Roy Pennington FAA

The Times of 8 Oct 1940 reported that Leading Naval Airman Roy Pennington was killed in a flying accident while on active service. CWGC states that he died on 30 Sep 1940 and his unit was HMS Daedalus.

Can anyone tell me anything about the circumstances of his death?

Re: Roy Pennington FAA

He may have died of his wounds as a result of an air raid on RNAS Lee on Solent / HMS Daedalus perhaps that of 16th August 1940.

Re: Roy Pennington FAA

Thanks for the replies. I guess he proibably did die of wounds received about 6 weeks earlier. I piece in the local paper for his home town states that he was killed in a flying accident. Is this likely for a Leading airman in the FAA?

Family notice in Times Oct 3rd 1940 says 'On Active Service' no note on Flying at all... this has changed to 'Flying Accident' by 8th October in his Obit

Re: Roy Pennington FAA

Though rare, it wasn't unheard of for a Leading Airman in the FAA to be a crew member. Although unconnected with this case I have confirmation that the Naval Air Section from HMS Daedalus based at RAF Christchurch from 1942 used Leading Air Fitters as aircrew 'assistants' on test flights without prior aircrew training.
