HQ IX TAC in France on August 14, 1944
Hello,
I am looking for the location of the HQ of IX Tactical Air Command 'somewhere in France' on August 14, 1944. Supposedly, they were colocated with one of Patton's HQ's at that time. But where??? Thanks for any leads! Ivo de Jong |

Ivo -
In Book Strike and Support by John Hamlin - The Section on IX TAC states that when Operation Cobra Began , 7/25/44 , the Combined IX TAC / First Army Operations Center Co - Ordinated the Attack. No location given - thought this may give you a Clue. Mike |

Kenn C Rust's The Ninth Air Force in WW2 is very detailed on groups and bases and air ops but does not seem to have so much on the command organisations. I have had a look through it but cannot find any reference IX TAC and the info you require. I think you'll have to do some research on Patton's activities! Dave |

Re: HQ IX TAC in France on August 14, 1944
Ivo,
I took the liberty to send your question to Piet Truren. I knew he has done research about this subject. He gave me the following answer. For more information you can contact him. Jaap First I thought I could find the answer very quickly, but I had to dig in my files till I had found the piece of paper with the required information I have used for my article about MEW-radar. IX TAC had to support US 3rd Army of Bradley at that time. At August 12th, 1944, HQ 9 TAC arrived at Coulouvray-Boisbenâtre (F) and went to Haleine (F) at August 22nd and at September 3rd to Versailles (F). According to Quesada August 13th and 14th were the most succesfull days of the Allied Tactical Air Forces in Europe. |

Ivo,
The USAAF Chronology on websites such as http://paul.rutgers.edu/~mcgrew/wwii/usaf/html/ (The USAAF in WWII) also gives good info about movements of Commands. The dates Jaap has mentioned are confirmed there. Regards, Leendert |
