Interesting... A new reprint from his previous privately printed book?
His book released by Editora Adler in Brasil is very good. I´m curious to know whether is a translated version from Adler´s edition or not.

Re: Biography of Martin Drewes, nightfighter ace

Well, I'm the editor and publisher. The new Sand und Feuer is far from a mere reprint of the anecdotic Sombras da Noite - it is Martin Drewes' full story told by himself on roughly 300 pages with 101 photographs. An amazing life. With 52 kills, MD is not only one of Germany's most successful night fighter pilots, but also the last survivor of the Luftwaffe's top secret Iraq operations in may, 1941. As some of you know, Germany's President Walter Scheel was Martin's adjutant from May 1944 til VE day and, on occasions, his rear gunner and radio operator. President Scheel has contributed the foreword, his private records and a handful of yet unpublished pictures. The book is on sale from today - you can order at www.neunundzwanzigsechs.de

Well, you say that Sombras da Noite was an anecdotal book... Sure Martin Drewes has a good sense of humour but there are few jokes in the text. Now that he has written a more serious book, hope to see him fully describing his action in Iraque with more photos from this operation.

Re: Biography of Martin Drewes, nightfighter ace

Hello Sergio,

Long time ago we had contact about some optical device from Nedinsco / Venlo and I remember to have discussed with you the Fw58 Weihe too.

Now something completely different: do you have contact with Mr. Martin Drewes and if you have, could you contact him whether the III./NJG 1 in the final phase of the war had a (or any) Heinkel He219's.

If someone could solve that mystery for our He219 research project, it is Martin Drewes as the last Gruppenkommandeur.

The reason for asking is twofold:
1) on 29 March 1945 a crew of 8./NJG 1 flew a He219 from Dortmund to Hildesheim but went missing. They were recovered in 1970.
2) after the war a He219 (Wnr. 290112) without unit markings was found in Hildesheim, it might have belonged to the III./NJG 1 but... only if the III./NJG 1 had ever received a He219.

Your help is very much appreciated because the identification of this He219 is one of the more puzzling questions.

All the best and patiently looking to hear from you,

Marcel Hogenhuis / Venlo
