Sqn Ldr George St Clair Boyd Reid - Belgium

In 1996 there were news items in the UK press about the discovery of a wreck of a Spitfire Maldegam, near Ostend, which had crashed there on 28 October 1944. It was said to be MK453 of 91 Sqn with Sqn Ldr Reid the pilot.

News reports stated that the body of the pilot was found in the wreck by Frank Raeman and Alex Martens-Mercy who believed that another pilot had been buried (in 1965?) in mistake for Reid who, they claimed, had still been 'missing' until they found him.

Is this correct, or is this another case of partial remains being buried at the time with subsequent partial remains of the same casualty later being found?

After a Sunday Telegraph piece in May 1996 the story seemed to go cold. Can anyone fill in the rest of the story?

Hello Andy,

Try this
http://www.aviationheritage.eu/nl/co...n-sqn-ldr-reid

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/sp...t-1362308.html

I have newspaper extracts for that dig but need to find them. Seems the matter is closed.

Best regards
