Stirling N3079 7 Sqn shot down by Wellington 311 Sqn 27 March 1942
Hi guys
I'm seeking information regarding the above mentioned friendly fire incident, that occurred on 27 March 1942. The Stirling crashed at Gendringen in Holland with the loss of W/Cdr Chapman and crew. Has anyone details of the 311 Squadron Wellington involved, please? Cheers Brian |

Re: Stirling N3079 7 Sqn shot down by Wellington 311 Sqn 27 March 1942
Brian,
Serial of the Stirling was N3709 rather than N3079. Where was confirmed the 'attacker" was a 311 Sqn Wellington ? I've as "culprit" Oblt Walter Fenske of I./NJG1 about 23.01 hrs. What's Theo Boiten's answer ? Regards, Henk. |

Hi Henk
Yes, I stand corrected re the seial. The claim regarding the involvement of a 311 Squadron Wellington appears on page 50 of Tom Docherty's No.7 Bomber Squadron RAF in World War II (Pen & Sword 2007) Has anyone access to 311 Squadron's ORB for that date? Cheers Brian |

Quote:
A 311 squadron Wellington crew saw a Stirling being shot down over the target area! But in fact the Stirling of W/Cdr Chapman was held in searchlight cones and shot down by Oblt Siegfried Wandam of 3./NJG 1 (23.00 h nr Terborg. source Theo Boiten). A/C crashed at Rafelder/Etten municipality of Gendringen Crew of 7 killed and buried at Gendringen. 7 squadron lost one Stirling out of 2 dispatched!! Regards Karl Lusink ARGA |

Hi Henk and Karl
Thanks for the clarification! The offending piece in Tom Docherty's piece reads as: "They were observed being shot down by a No.311 Squadron Wellington over the target." Cheers Brian |
