Me 262's runway???

Hello,

In order to 'kill a legend' of nearly 70 year old, I would like to know if someone else has a knowledge (rumor?) about a German 'runway' situated North of Elsenborn Army camp (in Belgium), at the German hamlet 'Am Krummen Ast' in the 'Hohes Venn' district.
Moreover It is said some Me 262's were allocated there which seems doubtful if not ridiculous as the main landscapes are bushes and soggy soil, but who knows... legends are difficult to kill.

Any hint, perhaps a short-term flugplatz there?

Best regards

Re: Me 262's runway???

Good evening ClinA-78 !

Some years ago, a book about German military installations in WW I & WW II in the Rhineland area was published by a local historian. Unfortunately, I don't have the title in my mind right now.

In this book was a note, that it was planned to built a large concrete runway in the area in question for German jet aircraft. There might have been some preparations as soil-examinations and measurements e.g. in the area which naturally caught the curiosity of the locals with the respective rumours,
but it never came to a serious construction.

When I find the title of the book, I'll give you a note.

Best wishes !

I agree with Horst Weber. With the rapid Allied advance toward the German border in late summer 1944, the "Flugplatz" in question wouldn't have gotten past the planning stage.

How close is this location to the Chičvres Air Base? Legends are not difficult to kill.

Re: Me 262's runway???

Hello,

Thanks for your attention

Elsenborn is about 170 km East from Chičvres AB. There are also some legends to kill there, except they got really jet aircrafts!
Legend still lives.
