Trying to id WC or BoB Ground Collision between Ju88A & Bf110C of 5./ZG76

Hello,

I believe that the Bf110C in this eBay photos is M8+EN of 5./ZG76. The seller identifies the Ju88A as from 2.(F)/123 or 4.(F)/121. The Ju88 appears to have run over the Bf110C on an airfield. Does anyone have any other views of the incident or have any idea when and where this took place? I think it likely to be either WC/FC or BoB.

I have the following:
1940-08-26, 4.(F)/121, Ju 88A-1, Fl.Pl. Caen-Carpiquet, Bei Landung auf Bf 110 gerollt. Bruch 20 %.
Unfortunately no details.

Thanx Matti,

I have no doubt that this is the incident depicted in the photo. We carry the Ju88 part of the incident in the revised EoE Luft Loss DB as: "26 August 1940: 4.(F)/121 Junkers Ju88A-1. Overshot runway on landing at Caen-Carpiquet and crashed into dispersed Bf110 of unidentified unit. No crew casualties. Aircraft 20% damaged but repairable."

We do not carry the Bf110 in our loss DB, but I'm sure that Peter Cornwell will fix that shortly. So the a/c codes here would be 7A+_M for the Ju88A, and M8+EN for the Bf110C. Other photos probably exist somewhere of this incident, and might provide the missing a/c code letter for the Ju88. If anyone else has photos of this incident, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Peglar,

Beautiful shots. Thanx!! I really appreciate your posting these. This confirms no victory tabs on the tail of the Bf110. Still hope to find photos showing full code of Ju88A.

What color was the spinner of the Bf 110? It seems to have a glossy black tip (or ring in front). Was the rest of the spinner red?

Re: Trying to id WC or BoB Ground Collision between Ju88A & Bf110C of 5./ZG76

Hello,

1) The color of the prop spinner tip visible on this a/c is red. I've got over a hundred photos of II./ZG76 a/c from 1940 in the EoE Photo DB, and this is how the red appears on 5 Staffel prop tips. That's how we know that this is a 5 Staffel a/c

2) As a result of the info supplied by Matti and the photos by Peglar, Peter Cornwell has now adjusted the EoE Luft Loss DB as follows:

"26 August 1940 Western Front Amend: 4.(F)/121 Junkers Ju88A-1. Overshot runway on landing at Caen-Carpiquet and crashed into dispersed Bf110 of 5./ZG76. No crew casualties. Aircraft 20% damaged but repairable.

26 August 1940 Western Front Add: 5./ZG76 Messerschmitt Bf110C. Stationary aircraft wrecked in collision with Ju88 of 4.(F)/121 after landing at Caen-Carpiquet. No crew casualties. Aircraft M8+EN a write-off."

Except for the individual a/c code on the Ju88A-1 (7A+_M) and crew names for these a/c, I think that this incident is quite adequately resolved thanx to Matti and Peglar.

Ain't the internet and the TOCH Board wunnerful!

Strange how the '88s props don't seem to have been damaged.

How come the red spinner tip looks so much darker than the red sharkmouth?
