Recovered P-39

SENSATIONAL! I guess after surface cleaning it'll look brand-new and fly immediately!

Yes, but instead of cleaning and becoming an 100% authentic piece in a musuem (where most aircraft are not), this one would be dismantled, most if not all of old metal trashed, and rebuild from newalclad to be flown by some snob. Also, I have some doubts about legality of the recovery.

Looks brilliant though, seeing the markings made my heart skip a beat!!

recovery

Guys

Not for me to say one way or the other on rebuild/restore/display as is/leave in lake as I am researching said aircraft for the recovery group!

What I will say is you learn a lot more for looking at one in what ever condition it is found.

Unfortunately, going on recent recoveries from Russia of lend lease American examples, they all seem to get restored in 'new' American schemes that have no relevance to the actual aircraft.

As these two examples were from Russian it would be nice to have seen the restored P40C 41-13390 in its authentic colours, or P40E 41-13570 which is being restored in its authentic colours as well. (Perhaps a possiblity here still. the aircraft can be finished in Olive Drab/Neutral Grey and have the stars/tactical number added temporarily before completing the final scheme). Instead they get painted in an American scheme from some theatre of operations or famous battle.

I am sure the P39 will be restored in some PNG/North Africa/Aleutian scheme and not Russian which is a real shame.

If we go onto British aircraft, Ex Russian Hurricane P3351 carries its authentic markings although it would still be nice to see a Ex Russian Hurricane in Russian colours! Recovered German aircraft seem to be authentically repainted as well.

regards

Mark

Recovery was legal and done by the book, with all appropriate documents being obtained from the Russian Govt.

Hello Mark!

Could you slip out the unit from which this Airacobra came? At the moment I can't remember any Northern Fleet or 7 Air Army Airacobra unit having tactical number on nose. Usually on rear fuselage or fin. The only AC unit I haven't seen photos is 773 IAP and I am hoping this is it.

Have to get the Aeroplane Monthly when and if it arrives here some day.

Cheers,
Kari

I know how some 'legal' recoveries have been done here. Appropriate documents are only part of the story.
