Captured BMW - Car - Not an Aircraft

Another photo from my dad's collection.
He was a mechanic with RCAF 403 Wolf Squadron.
This was a very nice car.
He said the "boys" liked it because it was fast.
BMW 326/328 Roadster - 1930's?
I wonder if it still survives - would be worth some big money.

Cheers

Re: Captured BMW - Car - Not an Aircraft

It's a 1937-1939 built BMW 328, two seater "Sport Cabriolet" or sport roadster. The fastest (6 cyl. inline, triple carb., 80hp and 150kph) and most beautiful shaped of it's kind at that time. Judging by the bumper, i would say this is the standard BMW body. Only some 324 were built, with about 50 still surviving. A real gemm.

Didn´t have Pips Priller such a car as Kommodore of JG 26?

@ RolandF,

yep, and this type of BMW is to be seen in a very well known picture, showing him and his Fw 190 as well.

Best Regards
Norbert

That would be nice if someone could post that picture of Pips Priller.

Perhaps it is the same car.

Apparently, when the "ruling party" confiscated automobiles, they were not too interested in these BMW's, because their high compression engines required high octane gasoline. Although they were rare cars, a high number survived the war because they were not usable for most purposes.

It's no surprise these cars would be usable around Luftwaffe airbases by pilots because they would have access to high octane aviation fuel.

Re: Captured BMW - Car - Not an Aircraft

Found the picture of Priller with his BMW and FW 190 - isn't the internet wonderful.

Maj (then) Josef ‘Pips’ Priller leaves his lovely BMW 327/55 Sport-Cabriolet to mount his even more lovely BMW 801 powered “Black 13″ Fw 190A-5.Lille-Vendeville mid 1943,methinks.

Cheers

Re: Captured BMW - Car - Not an Aircraft

March-April 1944. Priller´s Fw 190 just had exchanged its prominent double-chevrons against the new unsuspicious two-digit codes for staff planes.

These were also licence built by Frazer Nash. An old friend who was a Panzer Oberleutnant went to work for the Americans after the war, and was 'given' a 328 from the estate of a grand duke.

Pre ww2 Frazer Nash was the UK distributor. The licence and construction patents were secured after ww2 by Frazer Nash and Bristol Aircraft company. Bristol derived the Bristol 400 based on the BMW 327 design.
