Edmund Douglas Davidson & Spitfire?

Hi all,

Currently researching Edmund Douglas Davidson for a good friend of mine. From the attached picture can anyone tell us which squadron the aircraft belonged? Note the two tone spinner and lines painted on the nearside underneath of the aircraft, I do not think these are D Day invasion stripes! Any further information about this pilot would be greatly appreciated.

I think the stripes under the wing and on the radiator are shadows off the pilot's legs.

I agree that they are the shadows of his legs, and can be traced around from where he is sitting. That was my initial reaction (tinged with a little disappointment, I must admit), then I noticed a shadow on the other radiator too. However, I think this is the shadow of the u/c leg. The sun is very low in this photo, and almost head-on.

Then how do you explain the dark area on the starboard rad?

Shadow of the starboard gear leg and door. Look at its shadow on the ground to figure out where the sun is.

Guys, Appreciate all your comments, have to agree that my eyes are not 100% by a long shot, so appreciate the comments, sadly we are none the wiser in identifying the unit that Edmund Douglas Davidson served.

I too think that the D-Day stripes are too thin so as long shadows.

But back to the quest - surely a search for his Air Force Record would give the Sqn? I presume the pilot was British and was not a casualty in WW2? If not British there are many Allied Nations who hold service records that can be accessed?

Have you tried London Gazette for awards etc as this can sometimes give further details and service number?

I think also & maybe mainly shadows from propellor blades as well as pilots legs, this is obviously the shadow across the pilots knees & extending down to the port radiator housing. The propellor angle is right for the shadow on the starboard radiator housing to be from this too, perhaps also the U/C leg.
