Otto-Heinrich von Houwald

Hello everybody,

While studying Larry and Doug’s excellent “Office Career Database” (OCD), I’ve run into some questions regarding a couple of pilots…

According to many sources (including OCD) Otto-Heinrich von Houwald served in Spain as part of J/88 as a Leutnant claiming five victories. He was sent home in March 1938 and “all of a sudden” in 1938 he is a Major and Kommandeur of I./JG 137, which feels slightly to fast promotion-wise.
However, there is a Wolfheinrich von Houwald, who also seems to have served in Spain. According to OCD his promotions seems more in line with his service as a Leutnant in Spain and subsequent service in the Luftwaffe. Is it in fact this von Houwald, who claimed the five victories in Spain?

Best wishes/Håkan

Re: Otto-Heinrich von Houwald

A 40 years old Lt Otto-Heinrich seems unlikely.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houwald
Otto-Heinrich Ernst Wilhelm Christoph Haubold (4.) Graf von Houwald (* 8. Oktober 1898 in Spandau; † 26. November 1961 in Schildgen bei Bergisch Gladbach) seit Juni 1934 Adoptivsohn und Erbe seines Großcousins Christoph Heinrich Graf von Houwald, Oberst der Luftwaffe
Maximilian-Otto Christoph Albrecht Ernst Wolf-Heinrich (* 10. Juni 1911 in Frankfurt/Oder; † 24. Juli 1940 in Margate, Themsemündung) Hauptmann der Luftwaffe

Re: Otto-Heinrich von Houwald

Hello!

Thanks for the help - this seems to have solved this problem as well in that it was Wolf-Heinrich that made the claims in Spain (25 years old seems more appropriate).

Best wishes/Håkan
