Eudenbach, October 8th 1944
On October 8th 1944 Eudenbach airfield was strafed by P-38 Lightnings. Anybody an idea which unit was responsible? 367th, 370th and 474th Fg are imho the only options.
Thanks, John |

Re: Eudenbach, October 8th 1944
John,
I don't know if this is helpful; there is a small booklet about this airfield available. A member of a Flak unit (6./784) wrote in his diary that this attack was around 17.00 hrs. Result: "Latrine and washing barack gone...". Regards Heuser |

Re: Eudenbach, October 8th 1944
John -
S E C R E T DUTY GROUP CAPTAIN’S DAILY RESUMÉ OF AIR OPERATIONS Serial No 1759 Allied Expeditionary Air Force. 8 Oct - Day Fighter and Fighter Bomber Operations - 1,301 U.S. aircraft attacked airfields and landing grounds. ………….38 enemy aircraft were destroyed, 2 probably destroyed and 32 damaged on the ground on various airfields at which 36 hangars are also claimed as destroyed……………8 U.S. aircraft are missing. ……………. Since the 8th AAF did not fly operations on this date, this must the 9th AAF flying multiple missions. I checked the following two references for you but neither offered anything helpful: Miller, Kent D.. Fighter Units & Pilots of the 8th Air Force – September 1942 – May 1945; Volume 1: Day-to-Day Operations, Fighter Group Histories. Atglen (PA): Schiffer Publishing, 2001. Wolf, William. American Fighter-Bombers in World War II: USAF Jabos in the MTO and ETO. Atglen (PA): Schiffer Publishing, 2003 You may have to look for unit histories for the 3 groups you mentioned. L. |

How deep to the roots did you go ? In microfilm B 5686 (9th AF 1944, 16th September to October 10th, 1944) is not clearly visible, who undertook this attack by a double-boomed a/c to this airfield. Perhaps the individual Op/reps of the 367/370/474 + Night-Fighter (double-boom) this day bring clearance. Best wishes ! Horst Weber |

Re: Eudenbach, October 8th 1944
John,
The only 9th AF claims on October 8 were by P-47 units, air and ground. I have all the unit records on microfilm and have been through the files at the National Archives, so am pretty sure the following is accurate. On this date the following units claimed aircraft on the ground: 365 and 366FS's of the 358 FG at Germersheim, Sacshenheim and Chateau Salines. 378 and 379 FS's of 362 FG at Crailsheim 389 and 391 FS's of 366 FG at Ober-Olm 404 and 405 FS's of 371 FG at Stuttgart-Boblingen 411 and 412 FS of 373 FG at Frankfurt and SE Frankfurt 513 and 514FS's of 406 FG at Biblis. I have the claims, locations, and names of the individual pilots. I checked October 7 and October 9, no P-38 claims. If you find a different date, let me know and I'll check it out. Kent |

Re: Eudenbach, October 8th 1944
Kent,
Probably no claim for a/c destroyed was made. The airfield was attacked with bombs with no damage to a/c. I will drop you a PM to discuss further. Thanks, John |

Re: Eudenbach, October 8th 1944
It's probably not helpful but on 4 October, Eudenbach was reported as occupied by II./JG 6 with 17 Fw 190 (ULTRA HP 2588).

Re: Eudenbach, October 8th 1944
The 474 FG did not operate on October 8. The 370 FG attacked an airdrome near Giessen damaging hangars. The 367 FG attacked Bonn-Hangelar and also a second unnamed field from which, according to my notes, had no results observed. Perhaps this second field is Eudenbach?
