Fighter Pilot Hans-Jörg Karl + 8.5.44

Hi Erwin

Just to expand a little to what Manrho has posted:

8 May 1944: Feldwebel Hans-Jörg Karl of 1./JG 1 killed in Fw 190 A-7 "White 15" (W.Nr. 643 908) in aerial combat, crashed at Nordburg near Hannover, 100%

I hope this helps.

Horrido!

Leo

One known victory, his 1st, the Final Destruction of a B-17 in the Münster area on 22 April, 1944 (Perry Claims). His 2nd, a B-24 in the Sulingen area on 29 April, 1944.

Re: Fighter-pilot Hansjörg Karl +8.5.44

Thanks Gentlemen, for the posts and information. My connection with the fighter-pilot is very tenuous indeed, usually on my way to the doctor's, I always walk through a graveyard and past this wall plaque, have always wondered about the story behind it. I live in a town in South Germany (Kempten) a long way from Hannover, can only imagine, as his body was never found, perhaps the family came from this general area of Kempten, had a remembrance plaque placed in the graveyard for him.
One thing I don't understand, given in Leo's and Doug's posts - "White 15" what does it signify ? I understand the rest of the abbreviation readout, but not "White 15" ?
Again thanks for the help.

It means "the tactical number 15, white colour".

Re: Fighter-pilot Hansjörg Karl +8.5.44

To put it simple - the tactical number painted on both sides of the fuselage in front of the Balkenkreuz. It significates the 15th airplane of 1.Staffel Jagdgeschwader 1

Regards
