Seeking info on He111 of 3./KG27, 1G+IL nicknamed 'LUDE TIMM' in 1939

Hello,

For the EoE project, we're probably going to profile an He111P from 3./KG27, 1G+IL, that carried the nickname 'LUDE TIMM' and a dapper but somewhat seedy cartoon character drawn on both sides of the fuselage. According to "Merlin" "Lude" means bad guy or pimp in old Hamburg slang and Timm is a common family name in Northern Germany. We have at least four photos of this a/c, including three after a mishap when it landed on its belly. I'm including a photo.

https://ihra.smugmug.com/photos/i-fJ...-fJTmqvk-L.jpg

This a/c, incorrectly captioned as 1G+AL, appears on P.288 (my numbers, source isn't page numbered) of the Walter Waiss KG27 book, Vol III. It says it was belly landed by a pilot named Lt. Schneider. The markings, and one of the other known photos indicating "bei Warsaw" suggest that this a/c cracked up during the Polish Campaign period.

"Merlin" has "found a pilot named 'Schneider' with 3./KG 157 (3./KG 27) in three Flugbuchs from other crew members during 1937/38. Unfortunately no rank or first name was given in any case. It may be the Oblt. Schneider, who served from autumn 1939 onwards with 5./KG 28 and 5./KG 54." Matti Salonen has no record in his files of a Schneider in any of these units.

My questions are:

a) Who is this Lt Schneider?

b) Is there possibly a pilot or observer named "Timm" may have been the assigned pilot and was the one who chose the name? The 2015 version of the LOCS lists several officers with that last name, including three Walters, but none have enough career data to determine if they served with 3./KG27 early in the war.

c) Is there any cultural character by this name in German literature or folk art of the time--some published cartoon character?

c) Can anyone determine when this 3./KG27 He111P, 1G+IL, might have FL sometime around the time of the Polish Campaign--Sept, 1939, probably in the Warsaw area?

Thanx for you help.

Hi Larry,

The Schneider from 157 is Herbert Schneider, since 1937 as Lt. in KG157 , Mai 1939 KG 27 , in 1940 he lost an arm. Pre war he was a german politician.

lilsis,

Thanx. What is your source for this information? Do you know anything about the date and place of the belly landing of 1G+IL?
