Hans Maximow and Hemut Haensel

According to some sources Hans-Walther or Hans-Werner Maximow of JG77 (or JG27) was wounded in combat with 93 Squadron on 13 October 1943. However there is apparently another Hans Maximow serving with JG77 in 1944, named as Hans-Bruno. Can anyone advise me if these are one and the same person, brothers or just a coincidence.

On the same date Obltn Helmut Haensel is killed after claiming several victories. I think he has 8 in total (I have found 4-5), at least 4 on the Eastern Front, but his last claims appears to be a Warhawk of an unidentified unit on 26 November 1942, is his final tally 8?

On the same sortie a Fw Walther Stammwitz is posted missing, possibly again to 93 Squadron.

Can anyone add to the details I have given of these pilots?

Hi,

On 13 October 1943 Maximow took off at 11:00 for a sweep to Naples. He fought a combat with three Spitfires, and had to bail out from an altitude of 300 metres. He survived (albeit with a broken arm) and flew until at least June 1944. Hänsel and Stammwitz were also lost in this combat.

No. 93 Squadron made the only claims for the day, and the time and location match the III./J.G. 77 combat.

Cheers Arthur. FL "Hap" Kennedy is credited ins Aces High with both Haensel and Maximow in this combat. But my main question remains - is he the same Uffz Hans-Boris Maximow who later shot down a B-17 and is posted missing in 1944?

Hi Keith,

What is your source for "Hans-Boris Maximow"?

Hans-Walter Maximow of III./J.G. 77 claimed a B-17 on 18 May 1944, and was also the man downed on 13 October 1943. The confusion might arise from the fact that Jochen Prien used a letter from Bruno Maximow as a source in his Jagdgeschwader 77 history.

Super! Thanks Andrew. I expect the Hans-Werner or Hans-Walther springs from the same type of error, possibly because in several sources the christian name is give as Hans-W.
