Did Stab/St.G. 2 really use the Me110?

A wreck was found recently that according to the WAST was an aircraft from Stab St.G.2.

The interesting thing, is that is an Me110 wreck.

According to Michael Holm's amazing website (ww2.dk)...

Stabsstaffel/St.G.2 was formed 20.8.40, but was disbanded 8.42, and used mainly Do 17P, Bf 110D and Ju 87B/D
.

This aircraft loss was on March 10, 1943.

The thing is...Michael's website shows Stab/St.G.2 with bases up to October 1943...with no info of any of the bases having the Me110...so that contradicts it being disbanded in 1942...

Can anyone give me some clarification here?

TIA

Mike

Re: Did Stab/St.G. 2 really use the Bf110? Yes.

I have several dozen Bf 110 'incidents' in the East with the Stab/StG. 2 "Immelmann" (Stab of StG. 1 and StG.77 also had some). Nine of these are "MIA, cause unknown."

The dates range from 23.June 1941 to 7.March 1943, just a few days before the date of your puzzle.

The types range from C-7 through F-3 (for those who may not know, the 110E-3 and 110F-3 were recon variants).

GRM

P.S. I don't have a photo-hosting service, but there are pics of Stab/StG.77 Bf 110, S2+GA, with a fin/rudder well-decorated, with nearly 30 locomotives. This MAY be Bf 110E-3 WNr.4309, lost 19.Aug.1942 with its three crew on a mission to Anapa.

Had 10 Bf 110s in March 1943. During that month, the Stab lost one in action, sent 2 to the repair shops for overhaul and handed over the remaining 7 to other units. Did not have any after that date.

Re: Did Stab/St.G. 2 really use the Me110?

Thanks G.R and Larry!!!

Thanks for the link...totally missed that...

Basically, it appears an Me110 wreck was discovered a few years abck...and the WAST confirms the loss location, dog tag, and cigarette case (with the initials WG), as being from a bird from StG.2.

The person who found the wreckage has told me that this "W.G." is in-fact:

Fw. Grothe, Wolfgang (vermisst)...

Who went missing with:

Oblt. Müller, Gottfried
Ofw. Perplies, Hans

He also provided the following:

10.03.1943 - Loss Date
Stab St.G 2
F Pl.Qu. 7072 / 7075

Unknown loss reason

Bf -110E W.Nr.2436 KJ+EM KJ+ZM 100% Loss

The problem is KJ+EM is 100% a Ju87 Stuka - W.Nr. 6095

KJ+ZM "appears" to be correct for an Me110...as KJ+ZL is a known Me110 code.

But I cannot find any info on this bird...and trying to confirm that this is in-fact an Me110 wreck, and not a Ju87...and that the info that is being provided is 100% correct. Not sure why two codes were provided...maybe they found some wreckage with a KJ+?M....and they could not determine the third letter?

The link you provided only shows the Me110 F and G models...not an E...

Thoughts?

Mike

Hi, the loss record is quite unambiguos:

http://www.aviationhistory.no/ref_db...?lossid=136776

I do not know where your source got the other Stammkennzeicheb.

Will have a look at the strength reports of the unit to see if there are any details there.

Regards,
Andreas B

Re: Did Stab/St.G. 2 really use the Me110?

Hi, again

The aircraft in question had two former incidents, one in 1941 and one in 1942 - both times with 7. Staffel L.G.2

Its sister 2437 was with that unit also.

Andreas B

Re: Did Stab/St.G. 2 really use the Me110?

Isn´t this loss due to an air collision with a Ju 87? Maybe the StKz belongs to there.

Thanks Andreas!!!

Roland...

not sure...

I guess we'd have to cross reference the loss info for the Ju87 to see if it is match?
